Walkin' With My Friendly Dinosaur...

I went to a Bridal Show for Rock Paper Scissors on Saturday and when I came home, Mattie was just a walkin' around the house. Ofcourse, she needs her friendly singing dinosaur to guide her...

What the F-Stop?

Smile big; for Christmas this year, we bought each other/ourselves our first DSLR camera. My camera on my phone takes horrible pictures (thank you iphone 4) and with a rambunctious 11 month old,  the business,  the website and some of the fun parties I've been doing we just decided a good camera was a necessity.

We decided on the Canon Rebel T3i-- we did our research and really went back and forth between a Nikon and a Canon. We chose Canon for a couple reasons: 1) the douche-bag at Best Buy had a Nikon and couldn't tell us why she liked it and had no idea what she was talking about 2) Ashton Kutcher reps Nikon and he's the worst 3) it had all the right specs we were looking for, felt right in both of our hands and was the right price point.

When the camera arrived, I waited for Ken to get home so we could share it's amazing-ness. He put it together, charged the battery and then threw me the instruction manual and told me to go for it! Now for those of you un-familar, a camera instruction manual is about 3x4 in about 7 point font. It's probably 200 pages and is so technical it made this beginning photog shake in her new Hunter boots. So I did what any level headed girl would do, I flipped through the book, signed onto facebook, found the best photographer in the area and messaged her to see if she taught a class. NOT only did she teach a class, but she taught a class at the Tecumseh Community Art Center AND they offered gift certificates. Immediately, I signed myself and Sarah Esterline (Nikon user) up for this class. In one day, I got a DSLR camera, found the best photographer, signed up for her class and got Sarah a perfect "experience" type Christmas gift! BOOM. Success!

I took my first photography class on Wednesday with amazing photographer Melissa Squires from A Girl in Love Photography (www.agirlinlove.com). I loved it. I loved everything about it. Much like design, I love the technical yet artistic nature of it. (Disclaimer: No part of me has artistic talent. All the classes in the world won't make me "artistically good",  but I know I can get technically good :)) I now know what Aperture, ISO and F-stop are. I understand not only how to turn the camera on, but how to switch it to manual AND take 1 picture in manual that actually doesn't look horrible. Melissa gave us an assignment this week, too. We have to take 6 pictures that fall into different categories: love, hate, anger, excitement, a burning house, annoyance (just to name a few).  I'm out and about town, camera bag by my side, work bag on my other side and merchandise catalogs in a tote bag in my hand. Phew. Was there a category for picture of a crazy bag lady? :)

Words with the Crib..

Yay, I'm home AND attacking my pillow pet!!!

Mattie came home today- yahoo!!!  But tonight, I'm feeling this weird sense of deja vu (and I'm not talking about the sketchy strip club in Northern Indiana and Southeastern Michigan).  It's a feeling that I've been here before- kind of.

I remember coming home from the hospital after Mattie was born feeling so nervous about what was to come. I remember coming home after her first bout with RSV feeling so thankful that she was ok, but still so nervous of what was to come. After her heart surgery, I felt so thankful- so thankful that we had such a lil' fighter, that everything went so well, that we had the rest of our lives to look forward to, yet still nervous about her recovery. As we come home today, I feel so glad and so tired. For the first time, I don't feel nervous and it's a great feeling. Mattie is a healthy rambunxious little girl. She'll get infections, she'll get sick, and I'm sure we'll be back on the 11th floor at Mott again in our lives, but she's tough and she's going to be fine.

The ugliest gown in all of the land...
The smile.. minutes after crying for her pacifier :)
Truth be told, Mattie is such a little shit. I say that in a good way. I can almost hear you all, in unison shouting,  "she's your daughter Lisa, what'd you expect?" And I get it, she is my daughter, of course she's a little shit. While we were in the hospital, she got really great at pulling herself up on things. She got even better at repeating things-- mimicking us. Her fake cry became unbelievably believable-- when she gets what she wants she even gives you Ken's grin (it's a grin that without saying anything at all says everything- to me, it shouts, while laughing ofcourse, "I win. You lose"). She learned to throw her pacifier (oh boy softball here we come) and even became maniacal about breaking down the walls of her crib (I swear, had we stayed one more day that crib would have been toast).  I love that Mattie is a lil' shit. I love that she's fiesty. I love that she's got a personality already. I love that she's a perfect mix of both of our personalities. I love that she will NEVER give up. I know this because the crib told me so... and because of this, I'm back to feeling nervous!

Mattie's Second Ambulance Trip in her 1st year...

I should start this by saying that Mattie is ok. She really is.  She went to the doctor yesterday morning and because she was struggling breathing and her oxygen saturations were low due to a cold/respiratory infection, they sent her to the hospital. In a chariot. I mean, an ambulance.

This round of Respiratory Infection (or as we like to call it-- RSV, Jr. ) only put a hitch in her giddy-up, it didn't knock her on her ass. We're still at the hospital but as I wrote almost a full year ago when we were here for her first bout with RSV, Mott is amazing and each trip here truly puts things in perspective.

This trip, we 'get' to be at the new Mott Women's and Children's Hospital. I'll be honest, it feels more like a hotel than a hospital. It's 12 (we're on the 11th) stories and over 1.1 million square feet. Besides everything being new and shiny, each room is private. Along with Mattie's crib, we have our own bed ( a twin sized bed), a real recliner, a big screen TV, and a private bathroom with a shower for our use!

When you turned the GIANT TV on, a banner scrolled across the screen that said "Welcome Mattison". From this menu screen, you could order food, watch TV, use the DVR, watch movie theatre movies, play video games (including Wii and Xbox) or use the internet. Quite the set up.

The lobby itself is a sight to see-- The Charles Woodson Lobby is filled with big comfy chairs, fun and funky art and a beautiful cafeteria. My favorite part are the GIANT wooden blocks!

We've come across a few parents that were here when were here in June. We even came across a set of parents that were here when we were here last February. It's easy to be bummed to be back but Ken and I are reminded about what a long road we've had with Mattie, how thankful we are that it's "just RSV" and that we're so lucky that things have gone so smoothly. As our 11 month old tries to eat the stethoscope, climb out of the crib and entertain all the nurses, we'll take the ambulance ride and RSV (Jr.) and know that we'll be home soon!

My favorite part of the lobby-- the giant wooden blocks

The ER was new as well.  Mattie couldn't get enough of the nebulizer. She thought it was tasty!

Look, I'm a big girl-- check out my new toy!

My crib in the hospital-- I'm behind bars!

My new trick... "how big is Mattie?" (as she raises her hands) "SO BIG"!
I can do it in the hospital as well!

Hopefully, Mattie will be out of here tomorrow or the next day. These respiratory viruses aren't something to mess with. Until we're good to go, I'll enjoy the AMAZING new Mott, catch up on my Disney movies and order some room service, I mean cafeteria food :)

A Love Affair.

I'm a quote person. I love quotes. Movie quotes, song lyrics, quotes from books, from famous people, even quotes from TV shows.

I have tons of favorite quotes-- "Whatever you are, be a good one", "You will do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm",   "Bonesaw is reeeeadddyyy", "Do one thing every day that scares you", "Life is too important to be taken seriously", "If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis". You know, the basics :) The one quote that is truly resonating with me right now is not from some intellectual novel or philosopher, but from the 1998 movie, a favorite of mine,  Rushmore.  It goes something like "I guess you've just gotta find something you love to do and then do it for the rest of your life."

"You jus gota find something you love to do..."- Sounds SO easy. Since I spent my time in college playing softball and socializing, I spent the time after college trying to figure out what I "loved to do". I searched for a few years and "dated" quite a few different jobs. We always broke up after a year, or so.  In graduate school I realized that I probably wasn't going to love a job, but was going to love being truly good at something again, or love the way the job made me feel.  I wasn't looking for love with Rock Paper Scissors, we were just dating or running around, if you will.  I was looking for a creative outlet.  A way to channel my energy. I was looking to attain a goal that I set for myself years and years and years ago. We met late and night and early in the morning. Before I knew it, it was love and it was serious.

Besides being a mom & a wife (which I love), I love being a business owner. I do. I love that the decisions I make matter. I love that as I run around crazy trying to balance being a mother, a wife & a "banker", I'm also a business owner with a real live store front.  A store front that people actually come into once in awhile :)  I love that when I was 16 I said I was going to do this, and at 30, I did it. I love the creative outlet it provides for me. I love that it's something my mom and I can do together. I love that when people talk to me, they are talking to me because they want to hear what I say or actually want to talk to me, not that they are fearful they'll lose their job if they don't talk to me (as they often do during my day job). I love the constant search for new merchandise to offer and I love the thrill of always trying to find something that no one else has or has seen locally. I love helping people create their PERFECT invitation suite or help find fun ideas for a party.

I love that on a Friday morning, before the rest of the world is working, I can be up, at my store, unloading new inventory, being inspired by a silly card. The card read, "The world is full of people who will go their whole lives and not actually live one day. She did not intend on being one of them."

Truth be told, I'm having an affair on my career. It's a love affair for the ages, and it's serious. And as I'm out and about today,  I can't help but think about that silly card, and how I don't intend to be one of them.

The Insane War of 60 Days

This is not a New Year's Resolution, but a desperate cry from my jeans. They don't like working so hard. They yearn to be looser, to look better. "Get back on a daily work out regimen", they cry-- most folded nicely on my shelf since Mattie's birth. The other handful, worn and torn to pieces. "Repeat after me," they whisper, "there will be no mom jeans."  Truth be told, when your jeans talk, you listen. Especially when they tell the truth.

So, yesterday I decided it was time to shut my jeans up.  I laced my gym shoes back up, threw on old Notre Dame issue sweats and had a date with Shaun T in my basement. Shaun T? Who's Shaun T, you ask? Oh simply the man behind what is dubbed "the hardest work out on DVD". Shaun T is a trainer that takes you through a series of max cardio interval training workouts in the Insanity DVD's (the same company that created P-90X). This workout is intense-- even the hot actors and models in the workout video struggle getting through it.  I started to sweat, just by watching the introduction.

I completely understand that "intense" is one of those words that can take on many definitions.  The workouts in college-- now those were intense-- they were vomit inducing,  tear provoking, and pride demolishing. I actually have two teammates that admitted to full out peeing their pants during these workouts.   When you've been through a Heather Mason workout, intense takes on a whole new definition. Unfortunately, when I was going through H-Mase's hellacious workouts, I wasn't listening to talking jeans or eating baby cereal puffs, simply because they were what was available. Intensity for me is much weaker than it used to be but at the end of the day still insane. Intensity = Insanity. Insanity = 60 days of hell. 60 days of hell = quiet, well fitting jeans.

So, back to Insanity-- the first day is a full fit test to gauge where you start... and boy oh boy did I start weak. If this was a war, I lost the battle. I made it through the battle-- but I did NOT win.  Today's work out "Plyometric Cardio Circuit" is absolutely as intimidating as it sounds. I also made it through this battle, but still would consider it a loss. Good news, it's a 60 day war and it takes a lot of battles to win... and boy, oh, boy do I want those jeans to shut the hell up :)

A Year of Thanks!

There's something special about New Year's Day. It means so many different things to so many people-- It's my nephew Roman's birthday. It's a great U2 Song.  In a previous life that seems to be 1 million years ago, it was the day I nursed a massive hangover. Growing up, it signified a somewhat "exotic" location (ignore the years we were in Shreveport, Louisiana and El Paso, TX) and a bowl game. New Year's Day was always resolution day, or the day that I started my "enter goal here"-- my work out plan, my organizational plan, my financial plan, my plan to do good. This year New Year's Day was different. It felt like a deep breath, an excitement for things to come, and a feeling of overwhelming thanks. Instead of spending time thinking about all of the things I wanted to change (and believe me, there are many), or how hard this last year was (and hard it was-- hands down the hardest year of my life), I spent time with my husband and my precious daughter and reflected on the things that I am so thankful about. And although this year has had it's ups and downs, I realized how lucky I am and that I have so much to be thankful for. Thanksgiving simply isn't enough-- this year we're giving thanks for the New Year. We're toasting to new beginnings, new challenges and plenty of adventures and of course, ridiculousness with the Roberts Family!

I'm so thankful for... Ken and Mattie. I'm so thankful that we made it through this year as a family. I'm so thankful to have family and friends that were there to support us through this year. I'm thankful The Hoke's got the Michigan job and gave my dad and mom the opportunity to "come home".  I'm so thankful that Mattie didn't make me go through a hellacious labor, and that Ken was there with me to shout "she's cute, she's really really cute" when Mattie was born. I'm thankful my parents, Ken's parents and Jim, Melissa, the boys and Julie and Bryan could be there.  I'm so thankful Sarah and Meredith gave me a heads up about what REALLY to expect.  I'm so thankful we found a good pediatrician that could keep us relaxed and educated through out this year. I'm so thankful for Melissa's amazing post-hospital rigatoni and macaroni and cheese. Oh yah, and Lev's cinnamon rolls--- thanks to Sarah's daily deliveries, that got us through that first week. I'm thankful for the nurses at Mott, floor 5E, that helped us get through the 10 days of RSV hell when Mattie was a week old. I'm thankful for black licorice, and my dad's deliveries of black licorice while we were at the hospital. Here, I became really thankful that Mattie was as healthy as she was. It could have been SO MUCH worse. Also, I became thankful for underwear not purchased at Meijer, beds not made for the residents of munchkin land and showers that you don't have to wear flip-flops in. I'm thankful for the movie It's Complicated and the TV shows Real Housewives of NY and Orange County, Glee, Parenthood, Modern Family and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia-- they got me through some long nights. I'm thankful Ken is as great with Mattie, and all kids for that matter, as he is and I'm really thankful he doesn't keep dirty diaper score. I'm thankful for coffee. I'm thankful for Abs' raunchiness, Ciolli's realness, Lizzy's funny jokes and Marissa's Marissaness (it's a good thing, Mar). I'm thankful for Emily's blog... also for Nolan's hotdog dance,  Danny's jumps and Jeff's hatred of Ohio.  I'm thankful my mom and Mel can help with Mattie through out the week and that she'll get to know, truly know, her grandparents. I'm thankful for the Squishy Turtle book and baby swaddlers. I'm thankful for pacifiers and musical fishies that put Mattie to sleep. I'm thankful for snuggle time. I'm thankful for coffee (did I mention that)? I'm thankful for a handy husband who finished our shower, kitchen backsplash, took care of the house when the septic system backed up and built and finished a pergola on our deck. A.MAZING.  I'm thankful for Mott's Children's hospital and Dr. Bove's amazing hands. I'm thankful Mer and Dan moved back to South Bend. I'm thankful for Lake Houses- both my parents and my in-laws. I'm thankful for my dad. and my brother. I'm thankful for Farkle (if you don't know, you're missing out). I'm thankful for Uncle Mike coming and visiting 4 times this year. I'm thankful for my beautiful and healthy niece, Hadlee and for all of my great nephews, Roman, Aidan, Nolan, Danny, Ryan and Brandon. I'm thankful that Michigan had a better defense this year and I'm thankful for my understanding Notre Dame alumnae that get why I have to cheer for Michigan over Notre Dame. I'm thankful for Cake Vodka, Layer Cake Shiraz, Broke Ass table Red Wine,  Belgian Wheat Beer, The Boulevard Market's delicious cheeses and Zingerman's Memphis Macaroni. I'm thankful for Susan-- her advice and her trips to help at the store and with Mattie. I'm thankful for BOOOOOOOOTH, Ciolli and Lizzle and that they road trip to Michigan:) I'm thankful for the Esterline family. I'm thankful people read my blog-- even if it is just my closest friends and family. I'm thankful my mom and I could finally open our store. I'm thankful people in Tecumseh and our friends and family have been so supportive of the store and am even more thankful that Ken and my dad have been so supportive. I'm so thankful for my mom.  I'm thankful for Christmas trees. and lights. and stockings. I'm thankful Bryan has an opportunity to play at St. Louis. I'm thankful Ken loves coaching football--it's fun to see someone do what they love and be good at it. I'm thankful for traditions-- new and old, but especially The Annual Robesterline Christmas Cookie bake off, Thanksgiving Dinner, and Christmas morning. I'm thankful Jaq and Adam moved back from Cambodia. I'm thankful for reconnecting with friends at weddings and through facebook, seriously.  I'm thankful I have wicked good rock, paper, scissors skills. I'm thankful for big cities but living in a small town. I'm thankful for having an office in my basement. I'm thankful for the Keurig and Just Dance 3. I'm thankful Uncle Mike is Mattie's walking coach. I'm thankful Mattie likes to giggle. I'm so thankful my parents live so close. I'm so thankful Ken's parents live so close. I'm so thankful for our friends in Tecumseh, our friends across the country and staying in touch. I'm thankful for snow, pumpkin spice lattes, Starbucks red cups and Eddie Bauer comfy blankets. I'm thankful Al reached extreme stardom. I'm thankful for Mattie's dimples, Ken's cackle and Andy and Amy's Just Dance 3 moves. I'm thankful for all the creative and amazing people I've met this year. I'm thankful Mattie made open heart surgery look like tonsillitis. I'm thankful she's doing so well. I'm thankful for Dr. Fifer.  I'm thankful we both have jobs, opportunity, educations, cars to get us from point a to b, a roof over our head, food on our table and clothes on our backs. I'm thankful we made it through 2011... and "made it through" smiling and ready for the challenge of 2012.

A Non-commital blogger's year in review...

January. I was pregnant eagerly awaiting Mattison Mae's arrival. Sarah and family threw me a fabulous baby shower...some friends even surprised me! I was put on bed rest and started this blog. Brady Hoke was named the head coach at Michigan. My dad was named the defensive coordinator. My parents moved to Michigan. Ken finished our fabulous shower. Ken's grandpa died. It was sad...unbelieavable guy. February. Mattison Mae Roberts was born on February 7th, 2011, the morning after the Super Bowl that the Green Bay Packers won. We fell in love. She was perfect- 7 lbs, 11 oz with huge dimples. On February 15th, Mattie got RSV and we were in the hospital until February 24th.  Her surgery was set for June 13th. World renowned surgeon, Dr. Bove did her surgery. March. March came and went trying to keep Mattie healthy. So in love with MMR. Meredith and Jaq moved back to South Bend-- driving distance to Michigan! April. We celebrated Easter at my parents new lake house with Bryan and Julie. I turned 30.  CUBS GAME! Mattie went to her first football practice at U of M.  Uncle Mike came to visit. We went to the Michigan Spring Game. We learned McDonalds offers Fun Times for free-- sadly, it's just a newspaper. May. Thanks to support from Mel and my mom,  I went back to work (boo.) Sarah graduated from Nursing school! Yay! We celebrated Mattie's baptism and my first Mother's Day! Mattie kept growing and getting ready for her June surgery. We celebrated Memorial Day with friends in South Bend and with my parents at their lake house.  Spent a lot of time at Ken's parents lake house with Mattie getting ready for June. We fell deeper in love with MMR. Panic began to set in. I became an AUNT! Julie and Bryan had the most adorable bundle of joy... Hadlee Louise Mattison on May 31st! We fell in love :) June. I don't remember anything but June 13th. Mattie had open heart surgery to repair Tetralogy of Fallot. It was a 5 hour surgery at the University of Michigan, but felt like it lasted a lifetime.  She came out of surgery and did fantastic. Each day we learned how stinkin' tough she was. Almost 14 days later (and 13 sleepless nights for me on a bench the size of a pillow), Mattie came home with a couple scars, a ton of meds but rosy cheeks and a giant smile. So in love. When she was better, I had to go back to work. Ken coached Michigan's football clinic and got the defensive coordinator job at  Clinton High School again. Mattie started giggling. We celebrated our first anniversary. July. Ellie turned 3 and we all screamed for ice cream. We had our 2nd Annual Christmas in July Fiesta!  After that, who cares about July-- Mattie made it thru June :) August. Ken was named head JV coach at Clinton High School. My mom and I decided to open up a retail store in Tecumseh, Michigan-- Rock Paper Scissors. Mattie started to stand up and belly laugh. Visited Chicago for Meredith Potempa's bachelorette party! Started ordering inventory. Butterflies. September. Honeybadger Hertler was born! We focused on opening the store. Ken's JV team continued to win. Football season! Michigan beat ND in first night game. Michigan football looked good. Bryan was playing and made the active roster for the Ravens. Mattie fell in love with books-- you can sit and read to her forever. We fell in love with Mattie. October. Stayed in the Trump towers for Miss Potempa's wedding. Fell back in love with Chicago. Opened the store for the Appleumpkin Festival with the help of my mom, Ken, Rebecca Hughes and Sarah. The Hertler's, too :) Unbelievable. Fell in love with the store. Tecumseh. Mattie. Ken. Tons of love :) Ken's football team went 8-1. Avery turned 1. Good quality time with BOOTH.  November. The store had it's Grand Opening. Got really good at the game rock paper scissors! So thankful for all the support. Mattie began to crawl. Michigan beat Nebraska and Ohio State. Got to visit with Abs, Lizzy, Meg, Deanna and many other softball peeps at Alumni game.  Bonesaw was ready. Uncle Mike visited. Became Mattie's walking coach. She is still in walking training :) We hosted Thanksgiving. So thankful.  Chatty Mattie became chatty. Bryan was picked up by the St. Louis Rams and started his first NFL game! Had our first Black Friday, Small Business Saturday rush. Loved it. Can't wait for next year. December.  Surprised Meredith on her 30th. Had a great December with Rock Paper Scissors.  BOA went through a reorganization-I kept my job. Got to attend my first Roberts Family Christmas party! MATTIE'S FIRST CHRISTMAS! She LOVED the wrapping paper. Can't wait until next year!  Mattie likes adult food more than baby food. Loved getting to spend time at home for the holidays! Hosted mom and dad for Christmas Eve. Beat Andy in Just Dance once. Got demolished in Just Dance by Emily. Calling bullshit on the event :)  Became the proud owner of a camera AND a sewing machine! Recent Zingerman's Bacon of the Month club members-- Amazing. Rang in the New Year with Mattie and Ken! So in love. So thankful. So much to look forward to in 2012!

It's Like Christmas!

Working for Target after college for a couple years, I definitely understood the intensity that was required to set up and maintain a retail store. However, I figured setting up a small corner store would be easy peasy compared to a multi-million dollar Target store. Please make note of mistake #1. Taking bottles of shampoo out of a box and stacking it on a shelf based on product code is a walk in the park compared to the true merchandising it takes to make a 1400 square foot location look a) full b) unique and c) NOT like a Target.  I apologize to every unique small business retailer out there. I totally sold your effort short! It takes skill, patience and the right mix of products to make displays look thoughtful and fun!

Mistake #2-- Opening and unpacking all inventory at our house instead of the store! As the inventory started to stream in it was like Christmas daily. My mom and I opened each box, checked it in vs. our order and put it in the basement... requiring us to repack it and drag it upstairs and to the store for unpackalackin' and set up!

Donovan Designs Paper, some fun paper plates and napkins and tons of small lil' goodies that we unpacked to check in!

Thanks Coton Colors for the 19 boxes of goods. Yep 1-9.
After we checked everything in, returned some broken items and made sure some missing items were on their way, we got ready to move into the store! Thanks to our good friend Rebecca Hughes, my mother in law- the lovely Mel Roberts, The Hertler Family and the Esterline Family we made a bunch of random items look like a store! We even opened for the Appleumpkin Festival and had a blast getting to know people in Tecumseh. Our best sellers even suprised us-- the box signs, magnets and anything baby were a hit! Especially the "Can I get A Hell Yah" sign!

Check out some pictures here:
Celebrations! Paper Plates, Napkins, Funky cups, Party Hats, Vintage Paper Straws and Invitations to make your celebration perfect!

Baby, Oh, Baby! Personalized Birth Announcements, Fun Wall Hangings, Amazing Boogie Monster and Tickle Monster books, funky stuffed animals, burp clothes, Swaddlers, Blankets and backpacks!

The cash register and wrapping paper ladders!

Celebrate Everything with HAPPY EVERYTHING plates and attachments!
We LOVE these box signs!

It's still a work in progress, but we've come a long way and we LOVE the space! We're having a friends and family sneak peek on November 2nd and our Grand Opening November 4th!  And if nothing else, my mom and I feel like we get to celebrate Christmas daily!

In the meantime, check out our website (also a work in progress)! www.rockpaperscissorsshop.com
